The tank monument at Degania's gate |
Degania’s tank has become a symbol in the history of the State of Israel. It has entered history as a symbol of an act of heroism in the defensive battle of the few against the many, of human ability in the face of steel and of the determination of the settlers in defending their home. The Syrian tank is in the place where it was stopped in the War of Independence and serves as a monument. It is a French-made Renault tank made in 1934. It was hit by a “Molotov cocktail” improvised by the defenders. In later years a debate has ensued as to who had actually stopped the tank. Different people have claimed the credit. In the wake of the debate as to who actually stopped the tank, one of the Degania members has delved into the episode from its earliest days and produced a booklet titled: The Tank – the Battle at the Gate of Degania, containing testimonies from different sources.
